Rod Serling had it right in 1960
“You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension – a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over… into the Twilight Zone.”
This twilight in today’s terms represents as various types of war, but remarkably it’s a battlefield of ideology, based increasingly on hoked-up beliefs. Translation: an ideological coup.
It’s a war of ideas. Precisely.
The West needs to embrace this new twilight zone, now called social media and lacking in civility. Social media is the swamp in which automated and troll-fed ideology machines fester, and that is the key battleground. Civility in America is a stock investment that’s gone bust.
The CIA has had a go, the Air Force and Army theirs, Silicon Valley seems disinterested. We need them but none is the whole answer.
It’s time Madison Avenue took a shot. It’s about ideas, right? Where is Don Draper now that we need him? We have to battle back against warped beliefs with ideas that consolidate the West’s creative offerings, it’s welcoming equality and sure moral compass. We have been that. But we’re not headed there now.
It’s a war, so to speak, that must start now and continue clear and unrelenting for two generations. Happily, it combats warped messages at home and worldwide. People might call it the Thought Police but hey, what’s the NSA for?
If not that, then as seen through the lens of a military coup in a country like Turkey in 2016, the dark side’s reach for an atomic weapon is one small step for mankind.
“You unlock this door with the key of imagination…” Let’s use it.
